Tania Gill's name will undoubtedly be familiar to anyone that's been keeping a close eye on Toronto's jazz and experimental scenes over the past two decades. The Tania Gill Quartet is a primary vehicle for her writing and playing. The group launched their debut Bolger Station (Barnyard Records) in 2010 to numerous accolades including a nomination for ‘debut album of the year’ in The Village Voice jazz critics’ poll, and a spot on The Globe and Mail's top 10 discs of the year.

They will release a new recording in March 2022, entitled Disappearing Curiosities. Gill is joined by trumpet virtuoso Lina Allemano a distinctive trumpeter” and “impressive bandleader,” according to the Wire—who has risen to international prominence with a series of acclaimed independently-released discs; the insightful and consistently intriguing bassist Rob Clutton, whose duo recording with Tony Malaby was hailed by DownBeat as “expansive and sensitive in spirit”; and behind the drums: Nico Dann, a formidable and somewhat volatile presence in the unit and “a fiendishly precise percussionist,” as reported by Pitchfork.

Acclaim for Tania Gill:

“Pianist/composer Tania Gill understands the understated power of lyricism [… ] There’s evidence of Gill having drunk deeply at the double well of the Bleys (composer Carla and pianist Paul): in motifs, harmonic concepts, pianism and pauses….”

Glen Hall, Exclaim! on Bolger Station (Barnyard Records)

“Gill's spiky, sparse piano was most successful in channelling the eccentric spirit of the masterful Monk” — Geof Chapman, Toronto Star

“Her finely textured improvisations are always intent but casual, as if she were merely picking out notes and phrases that have always been there, waiting to be made audible. Her complexities feel natural and almost self-evident.”

Robert Everett-Green, The Globe And Mail on Bolger Station (Barnyard Records)
