ABOUT

Thank you Karen Oxorn for donating the piano tuning!

For her Ottawa appearance, Fernanda Cunha is bringing Tom Szcesniak from Toronto to present a different concert. Tom will play piano with her and will also play a couple of songs on accordion. Fernanda met Tom in 2011 and since then he has played with her in Ontario concerts and recorded a song for one of her CDs. That will be the first time playing in duo, and they are preparing a repertoire including beautiful bossa nova and brazilian ballads written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well some other tunes written by brazilian songwriters from the north and northeast of Brazil such as Djavan and Dominguinhos.

Fernanda Cunha is a brazilian singer. She comes from a musical family. Her mother was a singer and her aunt, Sueli Costa, is a well-known composer in Brazil. She began performing in 1997 at various clubs around Rio de Janeiro.

Fernanda made her first Canadian appearance at the Yardbird Suite in 2005 and has been a regular performer in Canada from coast-to-coast-to-coast ever since.

In 2009, she explored the musical affinities between Canada and Brazil with her fourth album, appropriately entitled “Brasil Canada” featuring songwriters and musicians from both countries. It’s no secret that, although Brazil is Fernanda’s homeland and she performs at jazz festivals all over the world such as Wien in Austria, Aarhus in Denmark, Borneo Jazz in Malaysia, Canada is her heart´s country.

Her 2017 recording “Jobim 90” was dedicated to the most important Brazilian songwriter, Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This year, she is releasing her 8th CD solo, “Fernanda Cunha Canta Filó Machado”. Filó is a unique Brazilian songwriter with a colourful repertoire. The recording features her band including Ze Carlos on guitar, Camilla Dias on piano, Berval Moraes on bass, Helbe Machado on drums and Canada’s Reg Schwager on guitar. Fernanda has been touring with this repertoire, she performed this summer 2019 in Canada (Edmonton, Saskatoon and Toronto), UK, Austria, and Brazil

Tom Szcesniak has performed as a musician on the scores of over 100 feature films, numerous television shows (such as “Earth:  Final Conflict”, “Street Legal”, “The Road to Avonlea”, “Side Effects”, “SCTV”, “The Wolf Man Jack Show” and “The Jim Henson Hour”) and over a thousand commercials.

As a player, he has also been much in demand by some of the finest international performing artists, such as Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, as well as jazz greats “The Boss Brass”, Gil Evans, Thad Jones, The Cape Breton Symphony,  “Nimmons and Nine”, Bruce Cassidy’s “Hotfoot Band”, The Canadian Pops Orchestra.

As a composer and arranger, Tom has used his writing skills to enhance a wide variety of cinematic, televised, commercial and theatrical productions. Music is an essential element of any visual art form, and Tom’s compositions have enhanced and illuminated feature films, as well as animated “live action” productions such as “Ruby Gloom”, “Franklin the Turtle” (syndicated feature and four full-length features), “Gerald McBoing Boing”, “Fraggle Rock”, “Sesame Street”, “Beetlejuice” (the ABC/FOX Animated series), “The Care Bears”, “The Adventures of Tintin”, “An American Tale”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and the animated CBS Series “Ace Ventura”.

In 1993, Tom formed a company (along with the formidable, musical multi-threat, Ray Parker), “Parker Szczmith Music, Inc.”, and since that time has been composing, conducting, playing and arranging under the auspices of this successful and award-winning company.
