Join Diane Nalini, René Gely and John Geggie for a celebration of the music and legacy of João Gilberto, giant of Brazilian music and father of bossa nova who passed away in July 2019. In addition to several songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim made famous by João Gilberto, the evening will include music by several MPB artists who were deeply influenced by him, such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Adriana Calcanhotto, Chico Buarque and Bebel Gilberto.

Diane Nalini – Jazz singer-songwriter Diane Nalini has released four critically-acclaimed CDs over the past decade, and will release a new album in December 2019. She writes and sings in four languages and has performed at festivals around the world. Diane won second prize in the UK’s Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year awards in 2001, and was nominated for the Grand prix de jazz at the 2002 Montreal International Jazz Festival. The Montreal Gazette wrote: “Diane Nalini has the voice, the phrasing, confidence, clarity and control to make a tune her own and turn it into a nuanced thing of beauty.” She has been heard coast-to-coast on national radio, including several feature interviews on CBC’s The Sunday Edition as well as Radio Canada’s Quand le jazz est là. Diane has given gala performances for President Bill Clinton and Sir Paul McCartney. An accomplished songwriter, composer, and lyricist, Diane has written or co-written songs that have been used in major Hollywood releases, indie films, television shows and video games. Diane is also the resident vocalist with the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra. For more info, visit: www.dianenalini.com

René Gely has been playing guitar since the age of 7, later studying at the University of Toronto under Eli Kassner and at the USC in Los Angeles under an Arts Council of Ontario Grant. While in L.A., his musical focus shifted from classical to jazz guitar and he studied for 2 years with legendary guitarist Ted Greene. In 1990 he received a Canada Council grant to go to Paris and write  a suite for Liona Boyd, under the tutelage of Pierre Bensusan. He stayed in Paris for 12 years, performing, recording and taking some lessons in improvisation with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy. He took up classical and jazz piano starting in 1995. He later moved on San Francisco with his family, starting the world music trio “Pulse Mondiale” that explored latin and world rhythms. Since 2005 he has been back in the Ottawa area, performing, recording and teaching. He was able to reform Pulse Mondiale with the excellent Ottawa percussionist Rob Graves and has been active on the local musical scene with many other artists, most notably, the talented singer Renée Yoxon. www.renegely.com
